Less than less
than 1 percent of the estimated 85.88 billion barrels of
undiscovered oil off the shores of the United States
lies in the North Atlantic region, which covers 92.4
million acres off the coast from New Jersey to Maine.
This Gulf of Maine region and specifically Georges Bank,
is home to thousands of marine plant and animal species
and is the spawning ground for large lobster and herring
fisheries.
Despite
pressure from oil companies to explore and drill there,
Georges Bank has been subjected to an oil and gas
moratorium for 26 years, in both the U.S. (80%) and
Canadian (20%) portions. The Canadian moratorium expires
in 2012, with a legislated mandate to announce an
assessment method by early 2010.
In early
February, The Georges bank Preservation Act was
re-introduced in Congress. It bans oil and gas
development in coastal US waters, including the fragile
Georges Bank.
This web
sponsored by the NoRigs3 Coalition and is designed as a resource for those wanting more
information about Georges Bank and the upcoming
decisions about the U.S. and Canadian moratoria.
